Drug convict Corby deported to Australia

Her comment, about missing her dogs, is the first time the 39-year-old has spoken publicly in years about her life or her feelings.

Over the years, unflattering reports about Corby's family emerged, sullying her image in many Australians' eyes.

Corby's case has mesmerized Australians since she was arrested in 2004 when customs officers at Bali's airport found 4 kilograms (9 pounds) of marijuana inside her boogie board bag.

Police shielded Corby's vehicle as she drove down the road to the airport to catch her flight to Brisbane.

For weeks now Bali officials have been insisting Schapelle Corby is no one special and her long-awaited deportation back to Australia will be "SOP" - the acronym commonly used here for standard operating procedure.

In Australia Corby has commanded public sympathy as local media followed her struggles with mental illness behind bars.

Corby had been scheduled to on a Virgin flight VA46 - a photo of her boarding pass, seat 1A, was even circulated on social media.

Passengers and airport staff talk about Schapelle Corby's arrival in Brisbane.

The 7 posts include photos of her family, video of the large police guard holding off the awaiting media and even one photographer falling off a wall trying to get the flawless shot.

Corby's final journey to freedom could well be made in an armoured police tactical auto, from her Kuta home to the parole board and then the airport, a prisoner one last time.

But then she boarded a flight on airline Malindo Air at 10:00 pm (1400 GMT).

Spokeswoman for the family, Eleanor Whitman, said the family had safely left the airport.

Corby was declared "healthy" and "well" today after a jail doctor and nurse and parole officers visited at her Kuta home to conduct a medical check ahead of tomorrow's deportation.

But the last-minute switch was confirmed when Mercedes posted a photo of the real tickets to Instagram. She was released on parole in 2014, which ended on Saturday.

Here she will sign documents before being handed over to immigration, at which point she will be a free woman.

Schapelle had "mixed emotions" about returning to Australia.

Fellow travellers arriving at Brisbane from Bali witnessed the operation to return Ms Corby home under the radar.

Despite the controversy surrounding her case, Indonesia has stepped up its campaign against drug use since she was jailed.

"I don't see the security threat for her but this is the responsibility as police, whether there is a threat or not the police must have responsible (sic) for security", Mr Sumara said.

Corby, who has consistently maintained she was the unwitting victim of a botched conspiracy, technically completed her sentence at midnight on Saturday. "Approching parole office for the last time".

"I have to do the security by increasing the police keeping guard on the streets around here. Priority of focus will now be on healing and moving forward".
