Surprise: Instagram is copying yet another feature that Snapchat pioneered

Location-based stories allow users to add posts from their stories to neaby locations, according to Business Insider. So, the next time you search for #yoga or another hashtag, you may see a story ring at the top of the page filled with stories using that tag.

While Facebook continues to aggressively copy its staple features, Snapchat is busy creating new ones.

Snapchat

In July 2014, Snapchat added the ability to see crowdsourced photos and videos from a specific location or event, like a concert or daily highlights from New York City. But once you do submit it, Snapchat will look at the text captions, emojis, stickers, lenses, geolocation, and meta data plus use machine vision to detect objects or scenes in the Snap to algorithmically index it for search. If you use it the right way, you'll be able to travel like a pro in no time, because you'll know about all the coolest spots before you even visit them. "We take a lot of that sort of knowledge and apply that to Stories", says Instagram Director of Product Blake Barnes.

First, Instagram's can only be accessed by typing in a location name or hashtag, whereas Snapchat's can be accessed by typing in nearly any word other than a hashtag.

In other words, travelers will be thanking you. The photo and video sharing app launched location and hashtag stories today. All you need to is to tap the X on your stories viewer list and your story will not show up on Explore. I got a story ring at the top of the search results page for NY and Boston, for example, but not Portland, Maine.

Stories disappear if no one has added to them in the last 24 hours.
