Hassan Rouhani wins Iran's 12th presidential election

Rouhani who won a landslide vote on Friday was making the comments as hostile President Trump was visiting Saudi Arabia, which is at loggerheads with Tehran over a list of issues.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Iran will continue to achieve new heights under the dynamic leadership of President Rouhani. Some said the pattern was all too familiar from Rouhani's first victory four years ago and Khatami's victories the previous decade.

Iranians have said a resounding Yes to President Rouhani who, in recent years and particularly during the last several weeks of campaigning, promised to expand individual and political freedoms and make all those centers of power, like the Revolutionary Guard, accountable.
"Who they choose for president is their business, as it should be".

Over 1.1 million votes have been found invalid thus far.

But the deal has serious opponents in the United States, where President Donald Trump and the Congress are reviewing their options.

He gained a reprieve this week when Washington agreed to continue waiving nuclear-related sanctions, keeping the deal on track for now. "The Iranian nation has chosen the path of interaction with the world, a path which is distant from extremism and violence", Rouhani said in first speech after his victory was announced.

The results represented a victory for moderate and reformist Iranians who have sought an end to their country's worldwide isolation and a relaxation of social restrictions imposed by the conservative mullahs. The vote may indicate that they will never be able to take control of the executive branch through the ballot box, as a big majority of Iranians do not favour them or their vision.

Today, the world knows well that the Iranian nation is on a civilized course with the global community.

Many wore purple ribbons in support of Rouhani as well as green of the reformist movement crushed by security forces after a 2009 election, whose leaders have been under house arrest since 2011.

"The head of the Russian Federation has confirmed his readiness to continue joint efforts to expand cooperation between Russia and Iran both on the bilateral and worldwide agenda", the report said.

Incumbent Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf was a candidate in the early stages of the presidential election but dropped out to back hardliner Ebrahim Raisi.

Ahmadi says the Interior Ministry hopes to have final results later Saturday.
