Ford Enables CarPlay, Android Auto on 2016 Models

Ford has started the process of rolling out Android Auto and CarPlay to most of its 2016 vehicles.

Ford is updating a large number of 2016 model year cars equipped with SYNC 3 infotainment software, adding Android Auto and CarPlay to the vehicles with a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, or using either USB or going through their dealer.

Android Auto is already available on all 2017 models, and this update brings the platform to around 800,000 additional vehicles.

While the new integrations will undoubtedly be welcomed by 2016 Ford owners, they're not the real news here.

In fact, over-the-air updates were one of the main reasons underlying Ford's acquisition of 400 mobile engineers from Blackberry earlier this year, Techcrunch reports. They can also use a Wi-Fi connection and install the upgrade directly to their auto.

Android, Android Auto, Google Maps and Google Play are trademarks of Google Inc. Both infotainment services allow users to access smartphone features such as navigation, music, phone, and messaging through Sync 3. By enabling Automatic System Updates in the car's settings and connecting to a home Wi-Fi network, the vehicle can automatically download and install the update. Not only is it convenient, it is also the first time Ford has ever offered a software update via Wi-Fi, paving the way for wireless and automated updates in the coming months and years. Users can control Apple CarPlay through the in-vehicle display or via Siri voice control.

Or download the update from this website and install it with a USB drive.

Now, thanks to a simple USB update (or by visiting a dealership), you can add Android and Apple's in-car functionality, opening the door to a new interface in your vehicle.

Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or later models running at least iOS 7.1. It can happen while the vehicle is off, so long as the auto was connected to said Wi-Fi network while it was running.
