Pence says US stands by ally Japan on North Korea problem

Mr Pence also insisted that the long standing United States commitment to South Korea against the North was "iron clad".

"If the USA comes up with a unsafe military option, then the first card is in our hands, then we'll deal with it with our pre-emptive strike", he said.

President Trump on Tuesday said "you always have to be concerned" about nuclear war when dealing with North Korea.

They will serve as the kickoff to the U.S. -Japan economic dialogue that was announced by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in February.

Pressure on North Korea is crucial, he said. He also added that an "all-out war" would result if the USA took military action against the country.

'We appreciate the challenging times in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocations from across the Sea of Japan, ' Pence said after arriving from Seoul for talks with Abe.

"North Korea would do well not to test his resolve or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region", Pence said.

"We'll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis", Vice-Foreign Minister Han Song-ryol told the BBC's John Sudworth.

Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The Bowling Green Republican said Beijing can put even more political and economic pressure on North Korea, after that country suffered an embarrassing failed missile launch last weekend. It test-fired a missile on Sunday that exploded within seconds of launch, following a grand military parade on Saturday.

President Donald Trump has already dispatched the USS Carl Vinson, powered by nuclear reactors, carrying nearly 100 aircraft and accompanied by destroyers, a cruiser, and a submarine to the region, reported the Daily Mail of UK. It also claimed that it has weapons capable of attacking the mainland U.S. Officials and experts, however, claimed that no nation has mastered the necessary technology to follow through with the threat.

On Monday, Pence traveled to the tense Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea, where he warned North Korea's leaders that after years of testing the USA and South Korea with its nuclear ambitions, "the era of strategic patience is over".

The precondition for solving all the problems today on the Korean Peninsula is for Washington to roll back its hostile North Korea policy, said the deputy ambassador.

"I will continue having constructive talks with Mr Pence so as to deepen the win-win economic relations between Japan and the United States", he said.

They also did not discuss during the lunch specific actions they might take if North Korea conducts another nuclear test, the official said, while adding that both sides agreed not to make public the contents of a small-group meeting that took place after their lunch.
