Let Me Help Palestinians Sign Final Agreement With Israel, Trump Tells Abbas
May 14, 2017, 02:33
At a White House meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Trump pledged to reinvigorate the stalled Mideast peace process that has bedeviled his predecessors and said he would serve as "a mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator" between the two sides.
Questions have been raised about Trump's choice of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who entered the White House with no government experience, to oversee Middle East peace efforts, along with Trump's longtime business lawyer, Jason Greenblatt, as on-the-ground envoy.
Trump, they added, will reiterate his belief that Israeli settlement construction on land claimed by the Palestinians does not advance peace prospects.
"Mr. President, you have the determination to be successful", Abbas said.
The Palestinian leader echoed Mr Trump's upbeat tone, saying: "We believe that we can.be true partners to you to bring about a historic peace under your stewardship".
In a major departure from the longtime US policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Trump said in February that he was open to either a one-state or two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"Today, under President Donald Trump, America's support for Israel's security is at record levels, and under President Donald Trump, America will stand strong in the face of the leading state sponsor of terrorism", Pence vowed.
A day after he landed in Washington, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas arrived at the White House for his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Republican senators have introduced legislation to cut off US aid to the Palestinian Authority unless the Palestinians stop making such payments, and in recent days they had urged Trump to raise the matter during his meetings with Abbas.
"I look much forward to working with you in order to come to that historical agreement, historic deal to bring about peace", Abbas replied, speaking through a translator.
According to former White House official Dennis Ross, Trump was helping Abbas by extending the White House invite.
The Israeli press is mostly focusing on how Abbas is trying to cozy up to Trump through flattery, as part of an effort to try to get on the American president's side on the issue. "I want to see peace with Israel and the Palestinians", Trumptold Reuters in April.
However, at the same time, Mr Trump has urged Israel to hold back on settlement building in the West Bank, which has been a long-standing source of tensions in the region.
But Abbas also laid out goals for a "just and comprehensive" agreement: a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. The fund provides $350 a month to the families of Palestinian terrorists killed while attacking Israeli citizens.
Trump called on Palestinians to renounce violence and to unite both Fatah and Hamas to negotiate with Israel.
