SNP win the Scottish council elections

May 13, 2017, 02:34

ICM's research director, Martin Boon, said there was now a risk that the latest poll was over-stating support for Conservatives and under-representing the Liberal Democrats.

The party polled 4.1% of first preference votes, an increase on the last election.

At first glance the SNP scored another remarkable success in the Scottish local elections on May 4.

Tory candidate Ross Thomson said: "These results make it clear that only the Scottish Conservatives are strong enough to take on the SNP in Aberdeen South".

The turnout for this ward was 45.3 percent, up from 35.30 percent in 2012.

So it is not the SNP losing ground to the Tories, it's Labour.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said his party faced a challenge on a "historic scale" to win back power, but insisted he could close the gap on the Tories.

"Now more than ever before there is a need to send strong voices for Scotland to stop the Tories from doing whatever they like".

SNP leader and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said it is for Ms Aitken, the leader of the SNP group in the council, to decide whether the party goes into coalition or not.

"The results like this across Scotland are a real springboard to beat the SNP where we are challenging them on 8 June", he said.

What was no more than a one-point lead over Labour in the local ballot boxes had seemed like small beer after the SNP's success in winning an overall majority at Holyrood a year earlier.

She will say: "We go into this election with one seat".

But even if everyone who voted independent would have voted SNP in a general election (a highly improbable supposition), that clearly can not account for all of the difference between the two performances.

The latest PA general election projection also had the Conservatives well ahead with 381 projected seats and Labour on 181.

"The Tories put an independence referendum at the heart of their campaign".

Following the local elections which saw the SNP come out as the largest party across Scotland's local authorities, the SNP leader warned Prime Minister Theresa May that her flirtation with Ukip voters in England to pursue a hard negotiating stance with the European Union will result in the "sacrifice of thousands of Scottish jobs".

As a result, the Conservatives gained 164 councillors across Scotland.

However, the task facing the SNP next month is to defend its remarkable success in winning 56 out of Scotland's 59 seats, a success based not on winning a little less than a third of the vote, as on Thursday, but rather on securing 50%.

The full results of last week's council elections have been published by the Electoral Management Board for Scotland. Ukip lost 145 council seats - all but one. In retrospect, Nicola Sturgeon pushing for a second independence referendum when she did has turned out to be an absolute gift for her bitterest foes.
