Pakistani bombing kills 25, deputy Senate leader wounded

District Police Officer Muhammad Ghazanfar said that initial evidence suggests it was a suicide attack.

He says Haideri is in a stable condition at a hospital in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.

More than 30 people were wounded, many seriously, he said.

All other injured people are also being shifted to nearby hospitals.

Sharif condemned the attack on Haideri and Anwar-ul Haq Kakar, a spokesman for the Baluchistan provincial government, said police had been escorting Haideri when the attack occurred. Local TV stations broadcast footage showing Haideri's badly damaged auto at the scene of the attack.

Baluchistan, along the border with Afghanistan, has always been beset by militant violence, including by ethnic Baluch groups agitating for self-government.

Mr Haideri represents the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) party, a Sunni Islamist party that is part of the ruling coalition.

Senate Deputy Chairman Abdul Ghafoor Haideri escaped the attack with light wounds, medical officials said, but his driver and another aide in the same vehicle were killed.

The Islamic State took responsibility for the attack on its official Amaq News Agency.

Maulana Fazulr Rehman condemned the attack on Haideri and said todays attack was not the first on the party. "I am injured but safe", Haideri said on private TV channel SAMAA. Broken glass and splinters hit me in the hand but thank God I did not suffer any major injury. The Syria-based terrorist group also took credit for the suicide bombing of a Sufi shrine in the southern city of Sehwan in February that killed more than 70 people. He says at least one police officer was among those killed in the bombing. JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Malik said Haideri's vehicle was targeted by the blast.

Paramilitary forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bazinjo Friday strongly condemned the suicide attack on Deputy Chairman Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidery.
