China Says It Tested New Missile in Northeastern Sea

Her counterpart is Suzanne DiMaggio, director and senior fellow at a Washington D.C. -based think tank and former official in the Obama administration, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency. In 2015, China for the first time demonstrated a whole range of long, medium and short range missiles during a military parade.

Beijing announced last month that it would continue to stage live fire drills and test new weapons to address national security threats, as a response to the US' recent controversial deployment of its THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea.

"The test achieved the expected result", said the statement, without disclosing the exact date.

Asked if the test's location in the Bohai Sea, close to the tensed Korean Peninsula, could show that the test was specifically aimed at Seoul's THAAD deployment, Song said that this was unlikely as Bohai is China's usual weapons testing ground.

In response, Pyongyang says it will "take measures to strengthen nuclear deterrence as fast as possible " North Korea said there's "nothing new" about the new North Korean policy (called "maximum pressure and engagement") adopted by the United States government under President Donald Trump and criticized it as being "a policy of hostility toward North Korea under a different name".

A USA defense official said, however, that the system had only "reached initial intercept capability".

It did not give any details about the missile nor the type of platform from which it was launched.

This initial capability will be augmented later this year as additional hardware and components arrive to complete the system, officials said. However, it's unclear what kind of missile China tested. Moon's parents were refugees from the North and his election could perhaps strain relations with the US, with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson each calling for a tougher line against the North and leader Kim Jong Un. The column also mentioned an article by Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, titled "Strategic impatience won't defeat North Korea", which ran in the bimonthly American journal the National Interest, and said that "Bandow's assessment is accurate".

Beijing has imposed a host of measures seen as economic retaliation against the South for the THAAD deployment, including a ban on tour groups.
