Brazil Lifts State of Emergency For Zika Virus

Brazil on Thursday announced the end of its national Zika emergency, AP reported.

The number of cases dropped 95 per cent between January and April, compared to the same period a year ago, the BBC quoted Health Ministry officials as saying in a statement.

The health ministry noted that from January to April this year, there were almost 8,000 Zika cases, a drop of 95.3 percent on the same period last year when there were more than 170,000 documented cases. Microcephaly, which is shown to cause birth defects, an enlarged head, and stunted speech in newborns, affected thousands of children after the initial outbreak. Also, ultrasound might help in detection of fetal brain development in case of pregnant women. However, there have been reports that Brazilian researchers have developed a molecular test to detect Zika virus, which helps in detection of the virus in flat five hours.

Zika, first recorded in humans in the 1950s, is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and spread from Uganda through Africa, Asia, the Pacific and onwards to South America.

"The Health Ministry and other organisations involved in this area will maintain a policy of fighting Zika, dengue and chikungunya", the official added.

Few people die from Zika and only one in five people infected is thought to develop symptoms. Suastegui became Nebraska's first reported Zika pregnancy case. Many would-be travelers canceled their trips to Zika-infected places.
