Facebook is reportedly working to debut premium TV shows next month

The report further states that Facebook will focus on teen-centric shows as the company sees rival Snapchat as its main competitor in this space.

Facebook considers scripted video in high-quality programming as a vital tool that can help in retaining users.

Facebook is also hiring a "software engineer, film" whose job will be "integrating footage from creative teams into our content rendering engine to produce new personalized videos".

These TV shows are also considered a way to encourage more brands to advertise on the platform than on the traditional television.

It is believed that a virtual reality dating show from Conde Nast Entertainment is among the shows that Facebook has greenlit. The Business Insider report even claims that one of the shows has already cast a Hollywood A-lister.

Facebook declined to comment for this story, Business Insider says.

"But (Facebook) decided to instead make the debut in time for the Cannes Lions advertising festival, which starts on June 17", the report said. For now, the company is directly licensing some shows, but it wants to eventually wants to rely exclusively on ad revenue-sharing deals with content creators. "This year, that number has fallen to just over two-thirds".

Facebook's thinking seems in line with YouTube's, as Facebook's primary means of monetizing its original shows will be through mid-roll ads, multiple people said. The social media giant has already started to test Ad Breaks in on-demand as well as live videos on Facebook.

Martin Garner, an analyst at CCS Insight, said: "It's now clear that last year's stellar results from Facebook represented the peak of online advertising growth, as Facebook had warned".

With a plethora of streaming services available, it's anybody's guess if Facebook's 2 billion-plus users will seek out the content in the "video" tab or not.

In addition to Van Veen, Facebook also hired former MTV executive, Mina Lefevre, to spearhead the creation of original content, both scripted and unscripted.

Unlike Netflix, however, all of Facebook's original video content will be free to watch and share.
