Twitter hopes to get its groove back with live programming push

While the company has been steadily adding users to its service in recent years, it's still struggling to operate in a profitable manner and producing video content is its latest attempt at becoming a sustainable business. As such, today the company released a new app which you can find on Roku's store. Twitter's channel is now available for Roku streaming players and Roku TV models in the United States.

The news comes in the same week that Twitter announced a dozen new premium content deals at its first-ever Digital Content NewFrontspresentation in NY.

The deal is beneficial to both parties because Twitter has reported that, "7 out of 10 of the most followed Twitter users are musicians, and Billboard's Grammy Awards live pre-show was the most viewed entertainment live stream on Twitter to date". This is the second biggest partnership deal for Twitter this week, after announcing that they will live stream news from Bloomberg Media. One of the most popular video deals to date is its agreement with the National Football League, which had resulted in live games being streamed for free each week. Twitter already had an app to stream video for Apple TV and Amazon's Fire TV devices.

The Twitter channel is available free to anyone with a current-generation Roku device regardless of whether they have a Twitter account.

"The Twitter channel on the Roku platform brings together the video and related conversation that surrounds live events to the largest screen in the house", said Ryan Troy, product manager at Twitter, in a statement about the launch. In a blog post, Roku said the fact that Twitter users frequently tweet during live events played a role in the partnership.

Compared with rival streaming-TV boxes, Roku is the most pervasive in U.S. households and tends to be one of the main ways people stream long-form TV from services like Netflix and Hulu, according to research firm Nielsen.
