Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Honors Officers Killed In Line Of Duty

Alaska's Police Memorial Week will begin this Friday to honor the fallen law enforcement officers from across the state; there will be multiple ceremonies at various locations, including two events in Juneau on May 10. Among those killed were Columbus police officer Steven Smith, 54. 135 officers were killed in the line of duty last year, the highest number in our nation in five years.

Kirkpatrick addressed the audience while standing before the black marble memorial wall in the lobby at police headquarters that bears the names of the fallen officers etched in white.

The emotions at the annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony near the Iowa State Capitol were especially raw today with the recent death of a deputy in the line of duty. Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds also spoke.

Agency honor guard members will join area musicians in rendering a rifle salute and "Taps" to the memories of those we will honor.

"I think law enforcement officers, we're all brothers and sisters in the business of protecting and serving", Hollenbeck said.
