Iowa top court puts hold on new abortion restrictions

Attorneys for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU argued the stay was needed because women who had existing appointments to obtain abortions were immediately restrained from getting them according to their scheduled appointments.

In Tennessee, a bill similar to the Iowa measure was sent to the desk of that state's Republican governor on Wednesday to possibly be signed into law.

The Iowa Supreme Court has just issued a temporary order, blocking part of a brand new abortion-related law from taking effect.

A Polk County District judge denied an emergency injunction that would have halted a mandatory 72-hour waiting period for abortions in Iowa.

An Iowa law requiring that women wait 72 hours before having an abortion is scheduled to take effect Friday after a judge refused abortion activists' request to block it.

The abortion bill that Branstad said he'll sign was pushed through the Legislature over the opposition of most Democrats.

The lawsuit - filed by the ACLU of Iowa and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America on behalf of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland - contends the measure contains provisions that are unconstitutional violations of women's equal protection and rights to legal abortion.

The abortion bill signed Friday morning prohibits the procedure in most cases after 20 weeks of pregnancy and requires a 72-hour waiting period. He is scheduled to sign it at 8:30 a.m. today. She said the state's mandate of a three-day, two-trip delay would be "irreversibly and severely" harmful for low-income clients and women facing abusive domestic situations. The law also adjusts the absentee voting period to 29 days before an election and creates an electronic poll book to identify felon status.

"We welcome Iowa to the growing collection of states enacting necessary reforms to prevent against voter fraud and boost confidence in our elections", Public Interest Legal Foundation President and General Counsel J. Christian Adams said in an email statement on the law.

The new Iowa law helps to ensure that women receive information about the abortion and their unborn baby, as well as time to consider that information before making an irreversible decision about their baby's life.

The court's approval of an injunction Friday came shortly after Gov. Terry Branstad signed the measure into law.
