Mayock: New Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton a lot like Chris Dunlap

Charlton (6-6, 277 pounds) has been criticized for being inconsistent, but he has the potential to be a quality defensive end in the pros.

The Cowboys took him anyway with their first-round selection, No. 28 overall, on Thursday night.

Charlton will open up at right defensive end for the Cowboys. The discussion focused on whether the club would/should go with an edge rusher or corner.

Day 2 gives the Cowboys a chance to gain a very high-quality defensive back, either at safety or cornerback, with what are now the 60th (Round 2) and 92nd overall (Round 3) picks. "I'm thankful for what they've done for me physically and mentally as a man and as a player, and I'm just glad that we get to shine some light on the hard work that we put in and where the program is going".

Charlton would have been a great fit as the closed end playing opposite Ziggy Ansah.

In an earlier meeting with executive vice president Stephen Jones, head coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, a scenario was discussed that involved taking Charlton.

The 66-year-old Pearson began by borrowing Jimmy Johnson's famous line: "How 'bout them Cowboys!"

The Dallas Cowboys addressed one need on defense and think they still have a good chance to target another. "Whether it was factual or not, we felt the tsunami was coming for someone to come in and help us". If we didn't get a pressure player with this pick, we might not see one for a while. Taco Charlton is a good start when it comes to fixing a pass rush that produced only 36 sacks this past season. They're also high on second-year cornerback Anthony Brown, a sixth-round pick from 2016. No one on the team had more than six sacks individually.

This isn't to say the Cowboys won't draft a player from a small school, but it will most likely come at the bottom of the draft. Jerry Jones really outdid us on that one.

"I want to thank the Eagles fans for allowing me to have a career in the NFL", Pearson said while smiling widely.

The veteran quarterback has opted to retire and heading to the CBS broadcasting network instead of continuing to play his craft in the National Football League (NFL).
