Shark kills 17-year-old surfer in southern Australia

Police said the 17-year-old was in the water with her father near the town of Esperance when she was attacked on Monday afternoon.

A beach on Western Australia's south coast, near Esperance, will remain closed today after a fatal shark attack. It was reported that she lost a leg, was treated by paramedics on the beach at Bandy Creek and was then taken to the hospital. It's a little bit early.

"Our advice to water users is to not undertake surfing, swimming or diving activities in the Wylie Bay area for at least the next 48 hours", the Department of Fisheries said in a statement.

She was in critical condition, but police later confirmed that the teenager had died of her injuries. Her mother and two sisters were on the beach.

The coastline is reportedly known for great white shark sightings. Authorities have not said what kind of shark may be responsible.
