Arrests of undocumented immigrants with no criminal record double under Trump
Apr 18, 2017, 02:03
On Sunday, the Washington Post obtained statistics on the illegal immigrants arrested by ICE officers between January 20 and March 13.
Overall, deportations were down 1.2 percent in that same January to mid-March period, at 54,741 people deported, but while deportations of immigrants with criminal records fell, the number of noncriminals deported actually rose.
The WaPo report, which divided immigration arrests into two categories, did not indicate if illegal immigrants with final orders of removal or those who had re-entered the US after a previous deportation were included in the "non-criminal" arrest total.
ICE officers are not overwhelmingly targeting illegal immigrants who have steered away from criminal court during their stay in the U.S. The "doubling" of ICE arrests involving these illegal immigrants isn't exactly a hard feat, either: The number of arrests involving illegal immigrants without criminal records under Obama's watch was a mere 2,700. As WaPo noted, the number of immigration arrests in Trump's first two months is far below the total over the same time period in 2014 when the Obama administration arrested 29,238 illegal immigrants.
As for deportations, the statistics showed they are actually decreasing- down by 1.2% from the corresponding time period a year ago.
Immigration detainers - voluntary requests from ICE to law enforcement agencies to hold those arrested beyond their normal release so that agents can take them into custody and deport them - also rose, to 22,161.
ICE field offices in Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta each arrested more than 2,000 immigrants during the first weeks of Trump's presidency.

Still, the numbers indicate Trump is making good on campaign promises. After the election, however, he told "60 Minutes" he would focus on criminals and said he would decide later what to do with undocumented immigrants who are "terrific people". "It's wherever they can find them".
