San Bernardino confronting a new tragedy

California authorities have responded to a report of a shooting in a San Bernardino school classroom on Monday, April 10, 2017, officials said. The man who fatally shot his estranged wife and a student in her San Bernardino elementary school classroom before killing himself had threatened her when she moved out of their house, authorities said Tuesday. According to police, Smith had left Anderson, but there were no clues something this drastic would happen.

Smith, 53, was killed in the shooting.

He wanted the boy to see the flowers, the candles, the balloons, the love shown to his friend, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, and the teacher who was also killed.

A 9-year-old classmate also struck by gunfire was in stable condition, good spirits and watching cartoons at a hospital, Marsden said.

"I thought they were firecrackers but then the police started coming and then I realized it was gunshots", he said.

A 7 p.m. candlelight vigil will be held at North Park Elementary Tuesday.

"He started crying hysterically I spent all night hugging him and telling him, 'Please don't ever leave my side, '" she said.

The two had dated for four years and got married in January. What appears to be Anderson's Facebook page features the declarations amid statements of religious devotion before his last public post on March 15. Yet those at school knew nothing of this discord.

Police say Smith never shared anything about her marriage problems with her colleagues and kept details about her private life to herself.

"There was no indication to anyone on staff that there was a potential threat", San Bernardino City Unified School Superintendent Dale Marsden said Tuesday.

Investigators found a note that made reference to the couple's relationship, feeling dishonored and "moving forward with no regrets", Burguan said. They did, however, find a note believed to be written by Anderson that spoke of feeling disrespected and needing to find closure. The note would not have been alarming if not for this violent event, he said.

They did, however, wish to bring attention and consciousness to an issue facing Jonathan called Williams syndrome.

The student who was killed, Jonathan Martinez, was born with a genetic condition and had survived heart surgery.

"By all accounts, Jonathan was a happy and friendly child", Burguan said.
