Sensex Ends Higher; IT Stocks Gain

Indian shares rose for the first time in four days on Tuesday, helped by a rebound in index heavyweights Infosys and ITC, as investors stepped up purchases before the start of the quarterly earnings season.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was up 130 points or 0.43 percent at 29,702, snapping a three-session losing streak.

The Nifty ended 0.61 percent higher at 9,237. The gauge had lost 398.50 points in the previous three sessions. "Banks continue to look forward to NPA resolution measures shortly, and the strength was visible today", James said.

Infosys gained 1.11 per cent on the BSE after closing as the top loser on the bourse yesterday.

Looking at the sector-wise performance, banking and financial stocks outperformed other sectors.

As per the latest shareholding disclosure on BSE, ICICI Bank has picked up 1.09 per cent stake in the company.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold scrip worth Rs 750.52 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased scrip worth Rs 826.66 crore.

The market breadth remained positive as 1,724 stocks ended higher, 1,153 closed lower while 144 ruled steady.

Reliance Industries, India's biggest private company by revenue, declined 0.5% to 1,374.10 rupees, while Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone fell 4.8% to end at 334.45 rupees.
