Instagram Direct Messages Now Disappear

Instagram is taking another page out of Snapchat's playbook with an ephemeral redesign of its direct messaging feature. Previously, disappearing messages were only a part of Instagram Stories, in photos or videos are visible to all of your followers.

Friends can tap the blue camera icon to the left of the text box to reply with their own disappearing photo or video message. However, once that content has been viewed, you'll see a little notice saying that something was sent and whether you'd like to view it again. As always, swiping right from feed will take you directly to the camera.

And Instagram Direct has a bunch of those.

According to Instagram, since the company updated their direct messaging function, more than 375 million people are now using the new feature. Before today's integration, these ephemeral messages were totally separate, and floated in circular icons above DMs, looking like Instagram Stories icons.

Facebook (fb) has duplicated or tried to duplicate ephemeral messaging app Snapchat's features a number of times, and the latest effort arrives in the form of a new update to Facebook-owned photo and video sharing app Instagram. It's now combining them with permanent messages to blue the difference between the two.

Snapchat noted in its IPO filing that 60% of its 158 million daily users used the app's direct messaging feature every day. Then, snap a photo or record a video.

Instagram says that this updated Direct functionality is now rolling out.

The Instagram Direct inbox does indeed look more streamlined now and it's easier to keep track of chats and have ongoing conversations.

Called Direct, the new Instagram feature will let you "turn any conversation into a visual conversation with photos and videos".
