U.S. special operations soldier killed in Afghanistan

An American soldier supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan was killed in action in the eastern part of that country on April 8, a USA official announced.

The statement released Saturday gave little detail about the circumstances of the soldier's death, but said that more information would be released "as appropriate".

The soldier was mortally wounded while helping Afghan forces conduct operations against Khorasan, the local branch of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Navy Capt. Bill Salvin, a spokesman for the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan, told CNN.

This comes as at least three USA soldiers were wounded in an explosion in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province last month.

Ten U.S. servicemembers were killed in hostile situations in Afghanistan in 2016, according to the website icasualties.org, which tracks those numbers.

The U.S. Department of Defense said it would withhold the identity of the solider until the notification of next of kin.

About 8,400 US soldiers remain in Afghanistan, carrying out two missions - one under NATO's mission to train and assist Afghan forces, and a second counterterrorism mission focused on al-Qaida and affiliates of the Islamic State.

The jihadists claimed a deadly assault on Afghanistan's largest military hospital last month, but survivors who spoke to AFP said the attackers chanted "Long live Taliban" in Pashto.

This comes a day after the U.S announced it will deploy 1,500 soldiers from Alaska to Afghanistan later this year, the U.S Army announced Friday.
