ANC lawmakers to oppose no-confidence motion against Zuma

ANC members used the funeral service of ANC struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada last Wednesday to voice their dissatisfaction over the president's leadership.

South Africa's largest opposition party sought to bar President Jacob Zuma from sacking popular Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday.

The speaker of parliament is considering recalling a joint sitting for a vote of no confidence put forward by the Democratic Alliance. Similar bids have failed to muster the needed votes to oust Zuma in the past.

Mantashe said the party was concerned about the calls for Zuma to resign from the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the nation's biggest labor federation, and the South African Communist party, both allies of the ANC, and was planning to hold talks with them. Late Tuesday, the ruling party released an email of what appeared to be committee meeting notes that indicated significant support for Zuma, despite scandals that contributed to big ANC losses in local elections a year ago.

Peters was amongst the ministers fired during the controversial cabinet reshuffle that has led to widespread criticism, condemnation and calls for president Jacob Zuma to resign.

Opposition parties have intensified their efforts to unseat President Zuma, pressuring the ruling party to recall him.

Mr Gordhan was at loggerheads with Zuma for months, receiving support from several ministers and major foreign investors, as well as many ordinary South Africans.

The Guptas and Zuma deny the allegations.

Jonas made headlines previous year when he said that he had been offered the finance minister's job by members of the Gupta family, Indian businessmen who have close ties with Zuma and have been accused of influence-peddling. The inability of Zuma's critics within the ANC to force him to step aside heightens chances that an opposition-sponsored vote of no confidence in parliament will fail if it goes ahead.

"They've further pledged that the public dissonance on the matter was a mistake that should not be committed again", he said.

In a bid to reassure markets, Zuma said he expected the addition of "many young ministers" to "add renewed energy into cabinet and the executive". The economic consequences have seen South Africa downgraded to junk status, as well as a fluctuating rand.

Mantashe's remarks come amid divisions in the ruling party.

Mantashe - who was among those who had hit out at Zuma in recent days - blamed Gordhan's sacking on "the irretrievable breakdown" in relations with the president.
