Crews battle massive fire in Oakland

One person was killed and multiple people were rescued after a large fire tore through a West Oakland transitional housing facility this morning.

Battalion Chief Erik Logan did not provide the gender of the deceased.

Crews rescued seven people, Logan said.

Hours later, firefighters continued with suppression efforts.

Three others suffered smoke inhalation in the blaze, which broke out at about 5:40am at the corner of San Pablo and Mead avenues.

He says he opened the door to smoke in the hallway and heard children hollering from the second floor. We also spoke to residents who came down the fire escape.

A four-alarm fire early Monday at a three-story residential building may have resulted in one death, a fire official said.

Firefighters were quickly pulled from the structure for safety concerns, forcing them to battle the flames from the ground and via extended ladders, according to fire officials. A resident who said the building was a drug rehab center and apartments on the other floors were for recovering addicts.

Logan said 86 people lived in the building. The warehouse housed an artists' collective.
