This is the first visit to Japan by a reigning Saudi monarch in 46 years. "The relationship of the two countries has now progressed to a strategic partner", Seko said at his meeting with Fakeih, which involved around 70 officials from both sides.

The king also booked 1,000 rooms in Tokyo's most luxurious hotels for the four day (three nights) stay, which will come to an end Wednesday.

The two countries agreed to promote 31 projects, including some to help develop manufacturing supply chains in Saudi Arabia and to promote joint studies on the possible listing of the state-run oil firm Saudi Aramco on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. According to Mr Abe, his country wants to "vigorously advance its ties with Saudi Arabia, which is the linchpin of stability in the Middle East".

The IPO is the centerpiece of the Saudi government's ambitious plan, known as Vision 2030, to diversify the economy away from oil.
