Airport Pat-Downs Are Now 'More Intimate Than Ever Before'

When Stratte-McClure asked the agent his opinion of the new procedure, the agent, in Stratte-McClure's telling, expressed his own dislike of it and explained, "They've discovered that bad people hide weapons in their trousers and we've got to do more extensive vertical and horizontal pat downs".

The change in pat-down policy comes two years after a report found major security lapses across the country.

The TSA's calls to police were an effort to provide local law enforcement "situational awareness" about the new pat-down method, Christopher Bidwell, ACI-NA's vice president of security, said in an interview Saturday.

Now, security screeners will use the front of their hands on passengers in a private screening area if one of the prior screening methods indicates the presence of explosives.

Pat-down procedures are used to determine whether prohibited items or other threats to transportation security are concealed on the person.

"A pat-down may include inspection of the head, neck, arms, torso, legs and feet".

Auxiliary pat-downs have been an unpleasant and unwelcome part of this experience as well, and if you thought they were invasive before, the TSA would like you to brace yourself.

It was a record-breaking week for Transportation Security Administration agents as 79 firearms were recovered in baggage - including 21 in just one day. This includes head coverings and sensitive areas such as breasts, groin, and the buttocks. Many people also decline to pass through an imaging scanner, which brings TSA to a question on how to have more effective body searches that the public won't deny. Passengers can also request the screening be conducted in a private area and that a witness be present.

The new technique, which the TSA began rolling out on Monday, is in response to weaknesses they claim they found in existing security screening protocols, and to reduce the "cognitive burden" on its agents, who previously had five separate pat-down options to choose from -four too many for them to handle, apparently.
