Bills say Tyrod Taylor having optional surgery in freaky release

"Bills QB Tyrod Taylor had a consultation visit yesterday with Dr. William Meyers and elected to have surgery this morning", the team said.

The Bills benched the starter for the meaningless season finale against the Jets - a 30-10 setback - reportedly in hopes of keeping Taylor healthy enough to pass his March 11 physical.

Speculation surrounding the health of Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been making its rounds ever since ESPN's Anita Marks mentioned that she had sources within the team saying that Taylor was playing through a groin injury. "The Bills were informed late yesterday of this morning's procedure", they said in a statement. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network confirmed Taylor's report.

The decision to bench Taylor led to the premature firing of Rex Ryan as head coach, according to MMQB.com. The recovery time is expected to be six weeks, which puts him around mid-February, just a few weeks before the start of the new league year.

"Did I believe that was fair?" The NFL management council could take the view that the wording in that contract means that as long as Taylor passes a physical and is able to play at some point in 2017, then that injury guarantee is voided.

Except, he was already nursing an injury, and on Thursday, Taylor made the decision to get it fixed - a decision that doesn't appear to have gone over well with the Bills.

Asked the day after the game if he thought the benching showed the team lacked confidence in him, Taylor said, "That's fair to say. But we'll see when that happens". However, the team chose to throw some major shade at Taylor in their brief but telling statement.
