Felipe Massa has announced he will retire at the conclusion of the current Formula One season which will bring an end to a fine career that has spanned 14 years.
Massa made his debut in F1 with Sauber in 2002, before spending a year as a Ferrari test driver. Let's not forget he raced for Ferrari for eight years, and came within a point of denying Lewis Hamilton the 2008 world championship.
Massa, who survived a near-fatal head injury in Hungary in 2009 when he was hit on the helmet by a bouncing spring shed from compatriot Rubens Barrichello's Brawn auto, joined former champions Williams from Ferrari in 2014. Having completed 242 F1 races, the 11-time victor will be hanging up his boots at the end of this season after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which also marks his career's 250th race.
However, Massa confirmed he decided on his future plans before the summer break.
While he was at Ferrari, Massa was always known as a second driver, with teammates Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen always grabbing the headlines.
But it is understood Williams were already on the look out for a new driver to race alongside Finn Valtteri Bottas in 2017, with Sauber's Felipe Nasr and Force India's Sergio Perez also linked with the drive.
By then, Massa had moved to Williams for what proved an almost-golden twilight to his career.
